Diabetes is not equated to the end of everything! Nor shall it be the end of your wonderful life! It should be the beginning of a new, wholesome life that you may not have done in the past. More and more people, particularly in their adult stage have developed diabetes because of an unhealthy and inactive lifestyle. The concept of inactivity may have lots of definitions. Doctors can still consider you inactive even with your desk job that may have stressed you. You can also be inactive while doing light tasks at home. Our body needs aerobic exercises to carry on its normal processes and proper sugar and fat metabolism. You need it regularly now that you have diabetes.

But of course, extra precaution is needed for your exercise routine. The slight change of sugar levels can lead to further health complications that may put your life at great risk. Also, diabetics are also observed to have changes in terms of endurance when doing strenuous activities. Thus, you should look for the right exercise routine for you. You may either consult it with your doctor or a gym instructor.

No to tiring exercises. Generally, diabetics should avoid extremely tiring exercises. Your body will react to it and will surely release hormones, including insulin to combat stress thus blood glucose levels will again fluctuate. Observe your body’s reaction to your activities. Do not push your self too much when you jog, walk or go on cycling. Have another person who will be your buddy and who is willing to assist you when you feel bad. Wear comfortable and safety shoes. Remember that any blister, cut or bruise may be hard to heal with diabetes. Exercises like lifting heavy weights and exercises that may result to heart palpitation are discouraged since it cause your blood pressure to rise. Never forget to take deep breaths and stretches before doing any activity. These warm-ups will prepare your body so that its reaction will be manageable. When alone, some diabetics wear IDs so that others can recognize and rescue them in case they lose consciousness.

No to carbs. On the other hand, you should not eat carbohydrates before your exercise routine when your glucose reading is higher than 100 mg/dl. Then again, you need to recharge every 30 minutes and eat something. When your sugar level is lower than 70 mg/dl, you need to eat lots of carbohydrates that may amount to 1530 grams for moderate and heavy exercises. If you don’t want to munch on carbohydrates, you can also bring some candies or sweets containing the same amount of calories. Any change of your vital signs and energy levels should immediately be reported to your physician.

Check your glucose level. The best preliminary activity when you exercise is to check your glucose levels. There are certain rules that should be strictly followed for your safety. For example, it is advised that you take in food or snacks before doing any activity when your reading is less than 100 mg/dl. Some experts would say that adding 15 grams of carbohydrates is good when you are planning to have moderate exercises such as walking or cycling. These additional 15 grams should also be taken every 15 minutes if you are planning to have intense exercises like jogging. There are tables portraying the number of calories and carbohydrates each food contain which you really need.
